BlueGen Water®

Anaerobic Wastewater water treatment in brewing segment

Overview: Faced with the challenge of replacing an aging CSTR anaerobic reactor on a constrained site, Hall and Woodhouse, a historic and renowned independent UK brewery, sought to modernize its wastewater treatment plant. The brewery’s expansion and operational efficiency goals necessitated a new system that could fit into a small, triangular parcel of land without breaching local planning restrictions or compromising on performance.

Bluegen Water Solution: After evaluating various technologies, the brewery selected the Aqana Downflow Anaerobic Carrier System (DACS®) for its compact footprint and operational benefits, including renewable energy production. This system was complemented by an Aqwise Technologies MBBR ‘polishing stage’ to ensure high-quality effluent discharge and operational reliability. The fully automated wastewater treatment plant, designed to accommodate the brewery’s needs, now operates continuously, showcasing a significant improvement over the previous system.

Key Features and Innovations:

Space-Efficient Design

The DACS® and MBBR solution was engineered to fit an odd-shaped, small parcel of land, cleverly designed within a corrugated steel building to minimize visual and environmental impact.

Operational Excellence

Achieves up to 85% methane concentration in biogas, contributing to the brewery’s sustainability goals by powering a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system for on-site electricity and heat generation.

Environmental Responsibility

Our solution minimizes environmental impact with efficient odor control and high-performance anaerobic treatment, ensuring safe discharge into the local sewer system.

Economic and Operational Efficiency

The DACS® plant not only meets treated water quality and biogas generation objectives but also offers significant CAPEX and OPEX advantages, including reduced sludge handling and minimal operator attendance.
